Single Serving Coffee

Train Station Visitors from Colombia

Aurora Maria Izquierdo Torresis and Jorge Edgar Paez Izquierdo visit us from Colombia

We had two very special visitors come to the Train Station in October.

Accompanied by Winston, Aurora Maria Izquierdo Torresis and Jorge Edgar Paez Izquierdo came to visit us from Colombia. They’re both from the ASOANEI cooperative. Aurora is the general manager and Jorge is the sales manager.

We had our Colombian Fair Trade Select coffee on brew.  This classically balanced single origin coffee originates from their farms. Our customers had the privilege to be served coffee by both Aurora and Jorge. As Jorge expressed it, they were proud to be serving the “best coffee.” It was a true tree-to-cup experience!

The Train Station staff really looks forward to meeting and sharing other members of our many fair trade partnerships in the future!

Tips to Pick and Pack a Picnic for the Fourth

Packing for a Picnic for The 4th of July

In case you hadn’t noticed, picnic season is in full swing. As we countdown to July 4th, it seems like a good time to offer some inspiration in putting together a perfect picnic basket to be enjoyed with or without the benefit of fireworks.

To help keep things organized, let’s start with the non-food items you’ll want to pack.

If your early summer weather has been a fraction as soggy as it’s been in Vermont, it might be nice bring a tarp in addition to a blanket, ideally one that can fit most of your picnickers’ behinds, and that is pleasant to sit on (the blanket, that is).

Paper plates and plastic ware…check. Cloth napkins are nice since they won’t blow away if the wind picks up. Handy wipes for messy foods and kids, a couple of garbage bags, aluminum foil, and/or plastic baggies for any leftovers. For entertaining the little ones, pack a flying disc, whiffle ball set, bubbles, butterfly net. Leave the tablets and digital babysitters at home.

Now the food. It sounds obvious, but you’ll want to put together a menu of foods that actually taste good cold. I much prefer my fried chicken hot and greasy, so that won’t find its way into my picnic basket. Veggies and hummus, chips and salsa or popcorn are good for snacking. Setting up a “sandwich bar” is a great option for the main meal. If you go this route, do all the slicing and dicing ahead of time, keeping everything in its own container to avoid sogginess and cross-flavoring: not everyone likes their bread soaked with pickle juice. For dessert, a pan of brownies is a crowd-pleaser and nothing says summer like slices of sweet watermelon. Pit-spitting contests are encouraged.

Finally, considering you are reading a blog entry from a company that sells beverages – or rather, a company that sells single serve beverage packs and brewers – there is clearly one key item I’ve forgotten. The drinks! If you think your Keurig® brewer can only be enjoyed at home, consider the to-go options a spill-resistant, Brew Over Ice tumbler presents you with: fresh-tasting lemonade, iced tea flavors like Half-and-Half and Snapple®, delicious iced coffee, and a splash of fruit flavor with Vitamin Burst® iced brews.

True, these tumblers don’t come in six-packs like some other popular beverage items, but you can at least enjoy a little refreshment during the ride to the festivities. And with a car filled to the gills with gear and kids and dogs, that might just be the nicest way to keep your cool.

Happy 4th, everyone!

Hot Apple Cider Receives a Perfect Score

Green Mountain Naturals Hot Apple Cider

Earlier this month, SingleServeCoffee.com gave Hot Apple Cider by Green Mountain Naturals™ Vue® packs a perfect score: 100-out-of-100!  But who’s really surprised? With a total of five all natural ingredients and no artificial flavors or preservatives, this drink should be at the top of the list for hot apple cider lovers (Like me!).

The review was sure to highlight the “rich notes of sweet apples with bursts of spicy cinnamon” and the “silky smooth” consistency. Overall, it was decided that Green Mountain Natural’s Hot Apple Cider was, “spot-on with real mulled apple cider.”

Don’t just read about how great the apple cider is, taste it!  Hot Apple Cider by Green Mountain Naturals is available in both in Vue® packs and K-Cup® packs on our website, as well as in grocery stores and retailers nationwide.

Dry Socks, Full Belly, Fresh Coffee

It is difficult for those of us who have not served to understand what that act means. The Vincent Jones - 1945 Camp Lucky Strike Franceexperience is non-transferrable – something we can read about, hear stories, watch the news on, but only those who have been there can know.

Until recently, after his passing, I did not know how much being a Veteran meant to my 91-year-old Great Uncle Vinnie. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry 89th Division under General Patton. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was also part of the first wave of infantry men to liberate Dauchen, the first concentration camp to be entered by the Allied Forces. Until days before his passing, he served as Secretary and Treasurer of his local American Legion.

He was a jovial man – always laughing, dancing and loving life. If you really knew him though you knew he carried the memories of his service with him always – though he didn’t show the shock and trauma he had experienced outwardly. He appreciated the comforts of home – dry socks, a full belly, and a hot cup of coffee (he never refused a meal, even if he had just eaten, or a cup of freshly brewed coffee).

Knowing this about him and his time in the service, I’m proud to know our coffee and brewers areTroops at Holy Joe's Green Mountain Coffee Station providing that comfort to many of our service women and men.

While abroad, soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan can visit one of Holy Joe’s Cafes to sip fresh Green Mountain Coffee and relax with their fellow servicemen. So far, we’ve sent over 13,500 lbs of bagged coffee and over 9 million K-Cup Portion Packs.

And at their deployment and arrival home we work with Pease Greeters at the PortsmouthPease Greeters at Troop Deployment 10-26-11International Airport at Pease, NH to provide a warm farewell and welcome home. We provide coffee (around 1,000 cups per month!) and Keurig Single-Cup Brewers so that great coffee, freshly brewed is available to the troops as they pass through the airport. Food, gifts and ceremony are all part of the Pease Greeters send-offs and welcome-backs.

For those of you who have served, we thank you for your sacrifice both during and after your service. We wish all of you the comforts of home on this Veteran’s Day – warm socks, a full belly and certainly great coffee!

GMCR and Root Capital at the Clinton Global Initiative

Last week, I had the honor of representing Green Mountain Coffee Roasters at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, as we made a joint Commitment to Action with Root Capital to improve the financial literacy and management skills of rural-based businesses in Latin America and Africa, which include many of Green Mountain Coffee’s coffee suppliers.

Jane Wales, Chair of the Clinton Global Initiative’s poverty alleviation working group, recognized William Foote, President and Founder of Root Capital, and me, on behalf of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, on stage as part of a session focused on cutting-edge efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and inventive models that help small farmers gain access to markets.

View the webcast here or listen to the podcast here:  Part I or Part II.

Our commitment was to support Root Capital’s efforts to expand its financial training with a five-year, $450,000 grant – the largest single grant in the coffee company’s history. Since its launch, Root Capital has provided more than $100 million in loans to cash-strapped farmers, artisans, and other small-holder producers, including nearly $50 million specifically to Green Mountain Coffee suppliers.

In 2006, with our support, Root Capital launched a pilot financial education and training program in northern Latin America and has since provided financial education to 1,300 business leaders from 50 grassroots businesses in northern Latin America.

Our new commitment is part of our continued dedication to supporting the coffee-growing communities that make up our supply chain (learn more here) and will support Root Capital in the next critical growth stage of its innovative PorFin financial literacy program. Through this partnership, we will enable Root Capital’s launch of the program in South America and Africa, addressing the immediate need for strong financial management within grassroots businesses, while building the long-term financial capacity of entire rural communities. In total, from 2009 to 2012 Root Capital will build the financial expertise among the leaders of 150 grassroots businesses, representing nearly 100,000 farmers and artisans in 12 countries.

Root Capital’s innovative work in providing financial services to the underserved global community of grassroots businesses has helped us better serve all our stakeholders and meet our own goals around reducing poverty and hunger in the communities we touch.  Our partnership helps create economic opportunity, supports entrepreneurial activity, and provides economic incentives for sustainable natural resource management in rural communities worldwide.

Greening Up Our K-Cups

"When will you be able to offer a more sustainable K-Cup?"

We hear this question a lot -- from our customers, sure, but also from people throughout our own organization. It's a simple question, but the answers are pretty complex.

Consider for a moment that sustainability means different things to different people. For some it's being carbon-neutral, for others it means being recyclable or made strictly with renewable materials, or a product that's compostable, biodegradable or petroleum-free. That's not an attempt to muddy the waters, but to try to lay out some of the many fronts we're actively researching in order to make K-Cups, and single-cup brewing in general, every bit as ecological as it is convenient. Greening Up K-Cups

  • We *are* researching alternatives to the materials that currently make up our K-Cups. There's not a lot we can publicly talk about just yet, save to say this is an active effort for us, and an important one.

  • We're conducting Life-Cycle Analysis to better understand the entire ecological footprint of the K-Cup. That's more than just its packaging... it's an attempt to evaluate the *entire* footprint -- and to look at both the product's positive and negative attributes.

While our research continues, we continue to take active steps. We're introducing more Fair Trade Certified® coffees into our K-Cup product line. We're promoting the "My K-Cup" reusable single-serve filter, which is compatible with all of the home brewers we offer today. And we recently added recycling codes to those parts of our home brewers that are recyclable.

We intend to continue to improve the ecological impact of our K-Cups until we're all of us satisfied -- customers and employees alike -- that our K-Cups are a winning proposition not only for coffee lovers the world over, but for the world, too.
