Special Reserve - Papua New Guinea Wahgi Valley

Ready for a treat?  Special Reserve - Papua New Guinea Wahgi Valley is fresh from the roaster and ready to delight your taste buds with its floral top notes, dark berry tones, and ripe cherry sweetness.  And its fantastic story, of course.

All of our Special Reserve coffees are handcrafted on small family farms and remote estates. This Special Reserve comes from the Papua New Guinea, a large island just north of Australia. The wide, high-altitude Wahgi Valley has volcanic soil similar to the better-known coffee-growing regions of Colombia and East Africa.

Lindsey Bolger, our Senior Director of Coffee, had her taste of Papua New Guinea coffee twenty years ago, when a small specialty coffee importer presented her with a sample. "I was immediately impressed by its marriage of East African-like floral and ripe fruit attributes and the deep, jammy sweetness found in the finest Colombian coffees," she remembers. "Who could imagine a single origin could display this variety of flavor and complexity?"

But this remarkable coffee is notoriously challenging to procure. Getting it to market was complicated by the remoteness of the island, unestablished freight routes, and the occasional flare-up of intertribal disputes. It developed a reputation for being brilliant but difficult to obtain, so we’re thrilled to be able to bring it to you.

Our Special Reserve selections pair the farmers’ best work with the art and craft of our Master Roasters – all so you can experience the unique qualities of these origins in your morning cup.

MyCoffeeRevelation.com Most Inspiring Text Winner

Sometimes, the most basic thing can be revelation-ary.  That’s something that Lisa from Connecticut realized and shared with us on MyCoffeeRevelation.com.

What’s the story behind this statement?  Let’s hear from Lisa:
“My revelation was very personal and true. I have a yellow labrador retriever (I rescued and adopted as a 5-week old pup) now 10-years old, named Hannah that has hiked with me since she was 8-weeks old. She and I BOTH love your coffee (she does in fact love coffee)! Some of my most peaceful memories are those with just her and I hiking in the Green and White Mountains together, no worries and no words needed between us. There is nothing in the universe more peaceful than a nice hike with a loyal lab and I mean it. I would be happy to send you a picture of the 2 of us both in our packs on a summit!”

With over 1,000 votes, Lisa was declared to have the Most Inspirational text revelation and took home a Keurig® Special Edition Single-Cup Brewer and a 6-month K-Cup® Portion Pack Coffee Tour so more inspirational revelations can come her way.  To share your revelations (and maybe win the Most Relatable category), visit MyCoffeeRevealtion.com to submit online or find out if your Coffee Revelation Station will be visiting an event near you!

Ask the Coffee Lab: How Should I Drink My Coffee?

Welcome to another revelation-ary edition of Ask the Coffee Lab.  This week, our crack Coffee Lab tackles a question wondering about proper coffee etiquette:

"Be honest with me, is drinking coffee with sugar and cream the wrong way to drink coffee?"

--

The National Coffee Association does an annual drinking trends survey of coffee drinkers. The 2010 version says that 63 percent of surveyed coffee drinkers put some kind of milk or milk substitute in their coffee and 48 percent put some kind of sweetener in their coffee. Only 31 percent didn't put anything in their coffee.

If you are doing something wrong, (don't worry - you're not), you have plenty of company.  We used to have a customer brochure that said "the best cup of coffee is the one you like best." We don't have that brochure anymore, but we still believe in the saying. It's your coffee, you paid for it, you enjoy it the way you see fit.

Me, personally? Organic Valley Half and Half and local, raw, whipped honey, every single day at my house before work.

There's a reason sugar and cream are popular. Cream (milk, half and half, non-dairy creamers) all add body to your coffee, cool it off (!), and the fat in higher fat creamers coats your tongue and actually suspends some of the flavors in your mouth longer. Milk also cuts some of the bitter in any coffee.  Sugar? Sugar makes most things taste better.

Lastly, I will add some caveats: Lighter roasted single-origin coffees with very delicate, clean tastes tend to have their subtleties lost a bit with cream and or sugar. Darker roasts and dark roast blends take cream and sugar a little better. And when we say better, we mean the coffee stands up to the additives and still has some "say" in the end result. If you want to experiment, Fair Trade Organic Ethiopian Yirgacheffe is a great coffee to drink straight (no additives). Fair Trade Organic Espresso Blend in a French Press or drip coffee pot goes great with cream and sugar.

Do you have other suggestions, let us know!

Island Coconut: Let the Coconut Love Begin!

I was trying to come up with a witty introduction for the arrival of our flavored Spring Seasonal (“Time to get Island Coconut-ty!” “First sign of spring: crocuses, baby birds, and Island Coconut.” “Time to put the cream in the Island Coconut, and stir it all up!”), but, let’s be honest: the excitement, thrill, and anticipation for this coffee’s annual debut doesn’t require fanfare.  It all comes down to two little words that set flavored coffee lovers taste buds afire:

Island Coconut®.

Don’t believe me?  Take a peek at the buzz:

This Fair Trade tropical treat captures the aroma of freshly grated coconut and is blended with the subtle sweetness of a lightly-roasted, Central American coffee. Unexpectedly refreshing.

Fair Trade Island Coconut is here in bag and K-Cup® single portion packs until June 4th!

Spring Revival™ Blend: A story of Rwandan survival and revival

I was thrilled when I went to our Factory Outlet this morning and saw Spring Revival™ Blend as one of the featured coffees. This coffee has sweet aromas, balanced flavors, and a compelling story of hope behind it.

The floral top notes of this Fair Trade Certified™ blend come from Rwanda, a country still recovering from a brutal civil war. I had the honor of traveling to Rwanda with our chief coffee buyer, Lindsey Bolger, a few years back and it was a life-changing experience. I saw how our business, and the relationships we have with producers, are making a difference to people who survived unimaginable horrors. When you choose Spring Revival Blend, you join us in supporting Rwanda’s economic revival, and the small farmers who are recovering by producing extraordinary beans.

Our connection to Rwandan coffee began in 2002, when we hosted a group of Rwandan farmers and industry leaders in Waterbury, Vermont. They toured our roasting facility, participated in a cupping, and explored ways to connect with U.S. consumers.

Our chief coffee buyer, Lindsey, then made the first of six trips to Rwanda to train farmers in cupping and sensory evaluation. She helped them detect defects and understand the quality expectations of the demanding specialty coffee market. In 2008, Lindsey’s protégées were asked to be judges for Africa’s first Cup of Excellence® coffee competition. Their participation was a dramatic illustration of Rwanda’s meteoric rise on the international coffee scene.

Today, Rwanda is one of the hottest origins in specialty coffee, with a well-deserved reputation for high-quality beans. Fair Trade prices, and the training offered by industry experts like Lindsey, are allowing farmers to make a living off their small plots of land.

We are proud to work with the Clinton Global Initiative, TransFair USA, the Cordes Foundation, and the hardworking, small farmers of Rwanda to bring you Fair Trade Certified Spring Revival Blend.

Spring Revival Blend offers a fresh flavor profile evocative of spring, bursting with aromatic floral and dark chocolate notes. Kenneth Davids, editor of the independent Coffee Review, awarded Spring Revival Blend an outstanding score of 90 on a 100-point scale. The coffee is available in 10-ounce bags, 2.2 ounce fractional packages, and K-Cup® portion packs for Keurig® Single-Cup Brewers through June 4, 2010 at participating retailers and at http://www.greenmountaincoffee.com/.

Rhode Island #Revelation2Action idea

We're about two weeks into the Revelation to Action competition and the entries are starting to roll in! The online competition is looking for ideas that strengthen local communities in New England and New York. So far we've got 16 entries and 13 nominations!

Today, we're highlighting one of the online competition's most read ideas last week - this one from Rhode Island.

Meet ecoRI, Inc from Rhode Island, about Rhode Island:

Their mission is " to investigate issues and write stories that will catalyze positive environmental change in Rhode Island. The nonprofit journalistic initiative is devoted to educating Rhode Island policy makers and the public about the causes, consequences and solutions to local environmental issues.

According to their entry, "no other state features an online news organization that is solely dedicated to local, independent and investigative environmental journalism. ecoRI.org doesn't have links to stories written by other sources and posted on other Web sites, and the stories, opinions and videos are written and produced by Rhode Island people about topics that matter to Rhode Islanders."

Rhode Islanders, what do you think? Let us know your thoughts below or discuss their idea on the Revelation to Action competition site.

Know another organization that is working to strengthen your community? Nominate them! If an organization you nominate wins, you win a Keurig B60 Single-Cup Brewer (just for nominating!!).

We're also holding re-tweet competitions every Friday during the competition, with a chance to win free coffee. Follow Changemakers and GreenMtnCoffee on Twitter for more information. You can also check out last week's Coffee Break video for more information.

For all prize and competition information, head to the Eligibility, Criteria and Prizes section on the Revelation to Action competition homepage.

If that isn’t enough for you, the first 100 participants* get a sample of Green Mountain Coffee’s Fair Trade Certified™ Organic House Blend and all answers get entered to the grand prize drawing of 12-months of Green Mountain Coffee Fair Trade Certified™ Coffees. Go here to enter: http://www.eatdrinkandbefair.com/quiz.php.

*Sorry, employees and their immediate family members of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. are not eligible. But keep an eye out for our internal Fair Trade quiz.

---

When we first started sourcing and roasting coffee for Newman’s Own Organics, we took Nell Newman down to Guatemala to meet some of the farmers who grow organic, Fair Trade Certified™ coffee.

Nell is President of Newman’s Own Organics and the daughter of the late Paul Newman.  Like many people on their first trip to source, she was struck by how labor intensive coffee farming is.  Her trip to the La Voz Cooperative would make a lasting impression on her.

“I think it’ll really make me think a lot more about every single cup of coffee that I have,” she said.  “I don’t think about every little bean that goes into that cup of coffee that I drink, but it really gives you a very different perspective when you hike up to 5300 feet and see people carrying down your coffee.”

Nell was also impressed by the medical support, education, and better quality of life that farmers enjoyed because of Fair Trade.  See more about Nell’s trip and hear her thoughts in this brief video.

Share the love of your Keurig.

See, its a perfect fit!

Many of us have a story about how they were first introduced to their beloved Keurig brewer.   My story starts when I was about 22 (wow, 6 years ago!).  I arrived at my dad's house and to my surprise I found a very strange device taking up space on his kitchen counter top.  He explained to me that it was the latest and greatest in coffee makers and that it was going to change the face of morning coffee routines around the world (I'd say he was excited).  I just had to try it out.  I popped a k-cup in the brewer,  pushed the button and waited for my first ever freshly brewed cup of coffee from a Keurig brewer.

Well, that's my story.  What's yours?

Thanks, U.S. News World Report!

We'd like to thank US News & World Report for the wonderful Green Mountain Coffee article that was published this week.  Click here to read it.  Here's my favorite quote from the article:
The company's roots are in specialty coffee sales, but its crown jewel—the Keurig machine—is the market leader among single-cup brewers, accounting for more than half of all machines sold.

GMCR makes Forbes' 200 Best Small Companies list

GMCR was again included on Forbes' list of "Americas 200 Best Small Companies."  We were ranked #55, up from our 2007 ranking of #88.  This year, Forbes gave us a special call-out in the "Everyday Tech Stars" section for the Keurig brewer.

Click Here for our inclusion in the "200 Best" introductory piece.  Below is a nice quote from their story.

"Yet there are also many other companies utilizing technology affecting our everyday lives. Take Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (nasdaq: GMCR). Its Keurig Single-Cup Brewer has revolutionized coffee making for those not interested in making a whole pot. The single-cup market rose 59% last year to $176 million, according to research firm NPD. Single-cup penetration is still only 5% of U.S. households, leaving lots of room for growth."

Click Here to see the nice GMCR call-out in their "Everyday Tech Stars" section.  Forbes wrote:
"Green Mountain's Keurig single-cup brewer is an enabler for java addicts. Pop a coffee pack into one its machines, and a cup of the good stuff is a simple touch of a button away--no grinding, no measuring, no mess and no physical evidence (that can't be washed away)."

Nell Newman Reflects On Her Trip To Source

When we first started sourcing and roasting coffee for Newman’s Own Organics, we took Nell Newman down to Guatemala to meet some of the farmers who grow organic, Fair Trade Certified™ coffee.

Nell is President of Newman’s Own Organics and the daughter of the late Paul Newman.  Like many people on their first trip to source, she was struck by how labor intensive coffee farming is.  Her trip to the La Voz Cooperative would make a lasting impression on her.
