All of our Special Reserve coffees are handcrafted on small family farms and remote estates. This Special Reserve comes from the Papua New Guinea, a large island just north of Australia. The wide, high-altitude Wahgi Valley has volcanic soil similar to the better-known coffee-growing regions of Colombia and East Africa.

Lindsey Bolger, our Senior Director of Coffee, had her taste of Papua New Guinea coffee twenty years ago, when a small specialty coffee importer presented her with a sample. "I was immediately impressed by its marriage of East African-like floral and ripe fruit attributes and the deep, jammy sweetness found in the finest Colombian coffees," she remembers. "Who could imagine a single origin could display this variety of flavor and complexity?"

But this remarkable coffee is notoriously challenging to procure. Getting it to market was complicated by the remoteness of the island, unestablished freight routes, and the occasional flare-up of intertribal disputes. It developed a reputation for being brilliant but difficult to obtain, so we’re thrilled to be able to bring it to you.

This is a nice story about relationships. Though Lindsey Bolger has been here for over 8 years, she hasn’t always worked in the coffee business for Green Mountain Coffee. She came to us from a nice coffee roaster from Olympia, Washington, already with years of experience and contacts and her own ‘favorite’ coffee farms and people.

When we were looking for the next Special Reserve, of course Finca el Valle popped up in Lindsey’s mind. She’d been there a number of times, and even though she loved the coffee, she couldn’t find a place for their coffee in our lineup at Green Mountain Coffee.

After we agreed to buy some of their coffee, I got the opportunity to call them up and ask some questions for one of our copywriters. The usual kinds of interview things – how big is the farm, (40 hectares) are there really old varieties of Bourbon there, (yes) what are your children’s names and what roles do they have on the farm? (they all work there).

She was so happy about us buying their coffee and so happy that it was Lindsey’s idea, she said, “I’m so happy to be selling coffee to such a fine company like Green Mountain Coffee, but even more, to be working again with someone so beloved by everyone here.”

Fresh from the roaster our latest Special Reserve coffee has made it's debut - Rwanda Lake Kivu. Five years ago Lindsey Bolger, our Chief Coffee Buyer, began working with a group of young coffee professional in Rwanda. All of them had grown up in the wake of the country's horrific civil war. Many had never drank coffee before.  In 2008 these young professionals, now experienced cuppers, were asked to be judges when Rwanda became the first African country to host the prestigious Cup of Excellence^® Coffee competition. Their participation was a dramatic illustration of Rwanda's meteoric rise on the international coffee scene.

Tasting Notes: Aromatics of black cherry and citrus blossom are perfectly paired with flavors of red currant, blackberry, and milk chocolate. Sparkling clean in finish, with a hint of sweet almond.
