Life is always interesting in the event marketing world, and you never know where the opportunities may take you or who you may be rubbing elbows with. From both a professional and personal standpoint, you can mark down the Green Mountain Coffee® sponsorship of the 46^th Annual Country Music Association (known as the CMAs to us fans) Awards in Nashville in the time-well-spent column.

In October, the Green Mountain Coffee brand sponsored a massive 2-day marathon of remote radio broadcasts preceding the Country Music Association Awards (CMA) Show in Nashville, TN. Personnel from 50 Country stations from around the U.S. were there, all part of the Clear Channel Premiere Radio Network. Naturally, all those radio personalities need people to interview, so also in attendance were over 100 of the biggest names in Country music today. Artists and bands like Faith Hill, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town and Kelly Clarkson were there, along with Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, Darius Rucker, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Taylor Swift, and many more. Many of them enjoyed the unlimited access to our Keurig® sampling array and tasty lattes and cappuccinos served up by a talented local barista that we partnered with.  To say the least, it was an elbow rubbing time.

(My strictly un-scientific poll revealed that the Green Mountain Coffee Caramel Vanilla Cream K-Cup® packs were the belle of the ball, and seemed to be the variety of choice for many country fans.)

 

We also served free samples of great K-Cup® pack varieties like Fair Trade Organic Sumatran Reserve and Fair Trade Vermont Country Blend® to all the fans lined up in front of the hotel, waiting patiently for photos and autographs from some of their favorite Country stars. 

Another part of our sponsorship entailed working with a great new band called The Henningsens. I recently had the opportunity to visit the farm where this coffee is grown and to get a rare, first-hand glimpse into the process that is meticulously followed to bring you this amazing coffee.  I was astounded to learn of the care and dedication that is put into each step of growing, harvesting and processing this coffee.  For example, only the tiny plants in the nurseries with straight roots are used for growing the Geisha varietal.   The coffee cherry pickers are trained for four-twelve months to ensure only the best cherries are selected.  Plus, once harvested, the coffee is processed in a wet mill that is dedicated for Geisha and is then dried in a mechanical dryer so the flavors are preserved.   That’s a lot of extra care and consideration – which you can taste in every cup. 

While we were in Colombia at Finca Cerro Azul, we had the opportunity to go and cup a variety of coffees, and when I got to Sample #4, I had my ah-ha moment.  I instantly knew that the coffee I just tasted was this Special Reserve – it was no ordinary coffee.  This coffee is known for its sweet, dynamic citrus-like flavor profile.  As you sip it, it turns gently from honey to blood orange, with hints of juicy cherry, lime and orange blossoms. 

I’ll take a lot away from this trip, but the most important is that the coffee I sip on while getting ready each morning will never be seen as “just a cup of coffee” ever again!  I hope you enjoy this coffee as much as I do!

Who doesn’t love a potluck?

Before you assume I’m about to go seriously TMI and tell you about my last physical, let me assure you that I’m not talking about my general practitioner…or any old doctor. I’m talking about THE doctor: Dr. Gadget. Last Friday, the “Guru of Giveaways” featured Keurig® Platinum Brewer and Brew Over Ice K-Cup® packs on The View’s hottest summertime gadgets segment.

 “What it’s all about is this new system that they’ve got with the K-Cup®!” Dr. Gadget said, demonstrating how to Brew Over Ice with Whoopi Goldberg and Elizabeth Hasselback.

I wasn't going to waste a second of the gorgeous spring weather, so I gathered a couple of buddies for some pickup games at the rec park. It was nice to shed sweaters and raincoats in favor of a t-shirt and shorts as we took in the warm sunshine. We started off with some half-field soccer and finished up by just throwing a Frisbee around for the last couple hours - just how a nice spring afternoon should be spent.

Honestly, one of my favorite parts of playing with close friends on the weekends is the sideline banter. Even though we don't take our games all that seriously, we all have a bit of a competitive side that tends to come out as we play. The amount of good-natured trash talk that's thrown around during our water breaks is hilarious and makes the games much more fun. Minor boasting turns into bragging, and soon enough it just goes straight to outright insults.

We had all gotten so used to the cool, rainy weather that we all forgot how hot it gets running around in the sun all day. By the end of the afternoon, we were all a little burned, or parched, or both and looking for a cool place to relax. I invited everyone back to my house, which happens to be the closest and the one with by far the best selection of iced tea and iced coffee (might have something to do with working for a coffee company...) . Luckily, I stocked up on plenty of K-Cup® packs for my Keurig® brewer before the weekend, so I had plenty to go around.

Some of my friends are relative newcomers to the one-touch convenience of the Keurig® system, and they were especially surprised by the Brew Over Ice varieties. Water views, great music, worthy causes, a full moon, beautiful sunrises, and spectacular sunsets – just some of the things you would have encountered if you were in Nantucket, Burlington, or Stowe this past weekend.  Green Mountain Coffee® was involved in events at all three locales, and all were equally awe-inspiring and successful.

On Nantucket, the Boston Pops, featuring special guest Carly Simon, headlined a fundraising concert for the Nantucket Cottage Hospital.  In addition to sponsoring the event, a team of Green Mountain Coffee brand ambassadors was on hand giving away cups of Keurig® brewed hot and Brew Over Ice favorites to eager attendees, as the music washed over beautiful Jetties Beach.  Naturally, Nantucket Blend® was one of the varieties of K-Cup® portion packs that were featured.

The beautiful setting of the von Trapp Family Lodge was the starting point for the 100 on 100 Heart of Vermont Relay.  Beginning in the beguiling hills above Stowe and winding its way along 100 miles of Route 100 all the way to Okemo Resort, this relay is a local and regional favorite.  Nearly 150 teams consisting of 6 runners each compete for top billing and bragging rights, while raising money for the Long Trail Association and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Vermont.

You’ve heard the old adage “good things come in small packages.” We think this is aptly describes the K-Cup® portion pack, the little wonder that fills your cup to the brim with hot or cold refreshment. However, there is another small wonder, the driving force behind the K-Cup that also fits the bill: the Keurig® Mini Plus brewer.

This little guy is the next generation personal brewer. The Keurig Mini you once knew has been overhauled and made-over into a more technologically advanced unit that gives you more bells and whistles, while still creating the perfect cup of coffee.

So what are some of these improvements? For starters, the Mini Plus lets you choose between three brew sizes: 6, 8, or 10 ounces. It heats and brews in under two minutes; it has a removable and easy-to-clean drip tray; it can take a mug up to 5 inches in height when the drip tray is removed; and it has in-unit cord storage! It comes in three snazzy colors to boot: black, red, and platinum. And if you are new to the Keurig revolution and aren’t familiar with the broad selection of K-Cups that are available, we even throw in a 22-count variety pack of coffees and teas for you to try!

Never used the Mini Plus?  Here's how it works: Step 1: Turn it on!  Step 2: The Add Water indicator will flash blue--lift the Cold Water Reservoir Lid to open.  Step 3: Fill the water reservoir to the desired fill level and close the reservoir lid.  Step 4: Place mug on the drip tray.  Step 5: Lift the Brewer Handle to open--water will exit the reservoir and enter the brewer.  Step 6: Place selected K-Cup into the K-Cup Assembly.  Step 7: Lower the Brewer Handle completely and firmly to close.  Handy Operating Hint: before you lower the brewer handle to begin the brew cycle, make sure that all of the water has left the reservoir and drained into the brewer (you’ll be able to hear it draining). If you lower the brewer handle before the water has drained into the brewer, it will think it doesn’t have enough water in it, and will prompt you to add more. That will cause your cup to overflow and create quite a mess! (You’ll thank me later for this tip—trust me, I’m speaking from experience.  It even gives these instructions in the operator’s manual, which obviously I didn’t read.  That’ll teach me…).  Step 8: The Brew button will flash blue--press it; it will then flash red while the water is heating.   Step 9: The water will reach the correct temperature in approx. 2 minutes; the Brew Button will turn solid red and your beverage will start to dispense.  Step 10: Enjoy!
