Free Keurig

Maple Goodness

I think March is my honest to goodness favorite month of the whole year. There’s something so hopeful about the sunshine, the ever-warming days, as well as the noticeably lighter nights.  Even in the midst of this record breaking cold, I’m still on the upswing and basking in the bounty that Vermont has to offer this time of year.  Last weekend, my family and I went to a Maple Open House – this is a somewhat new tradition for us (since we no longer boil our own sap) to visit with farmers and hobby maple sugar producers who open up their sugar houses for visitors to pour in, sample just boiled syrup, and purchase a gallon or two hot off the press.  I bought a pint from our friends the McBride’s in Westford and decided to get to work on using it in some recipes.  Of course, I had it on my Sunday morning waffles, but I decided to take a stab at incorporating it into granola.  So here’s my take and feel free to substitute in whatever nuts or dried fruits you have on hand. After making it, I realized that it would be better to wait to add the raisins after baking. It would also be really good with dried apricots.  Enjoy this over yogurt and paired with your morning cup of coffee! Mine is always Green Mountain Coffee® Mocha Nut Fudge brewed in my Keurig® brewer

Ingredients:

3 Cups old-fashioned oats

¼ Cup chopped pecans

¼ Cup chopped almonds

¼ Sesame seeds

¼ Teaspoon coarse sea salt

5 Tablespoons Vermont Maple Syrup

4 Teaspoons vegetable oil

½ Teaspoon vanilla

½ Cup raisins

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl combine all ingredients, minus the raisins.  Spread on a rimmed baking sheet with lined with parchment paper. Bake until golden brown, about 27 minutes, but watch it carefully. About ½ way through baking, rotate the sheet. Once cool, toss in raisins.  Serve over yogurt, fromage blanc or eat plain and enjoy!

A Few Sweet Fall Treats and Tunes at the Train Station

Maple Bon Bon LatteSweet Pumpkin Surpreme

Have you see the first leaves changing for fall? There are a few on our Waterbury Vermont campus!  This inspiring season has brought out two new, tantalizing drinks in the Green Mountain Coffee® Train Station.

We have the Sweet Pumpkin Supreme: our very own Pumpkin Spice coffee complemented with sweet caramel syrup and a splash of warm steamed cream. It’s a treat to warm you up and sweeten your day as the autumn temperatures brighten up the mountain sides around us.

We're also crafting the Maple Bon Bon Latte: espresso, steamed chocolate milk, and a shot of real Vermont maple syrup. The espresso is sweetened up by the maple syrup and the chocolate milk leaves a smooth aftertaste.  This is a favorite served hot or iced!

With a cup of coffee to keep us going, we have our final few weeks of Music on the Porch up ahead this month. For the last three weeks we will be giving away four raffle prizes every Sunday: a Vue® brewer, a Classic Keurig® brewer, a bag or box of coffee, and one free drink at the Train Station. Drawings are held at the end of every Music on the Porch event. Music plays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET on Sundays. All raffle proceeds support Food4Farmers.

August 16th we have the Growlers, a well-known local group, playing blues, country and rock and roll for us. August 25th Jim Charonko will be playing folk, rock and familiar oldies. Our grand finale musician will be Seth Yacovone on September 1st playing his original blues tunes.

Make sure you have a chance to stop in this month! Try a new coffee, settle in and listen to some great local music!

Green Mountain Coffee Goes Country at the CMAs

Green Mountain Coffee at the CMAs

Life is always interesting in the event marketing world, and you never know where the opportunities may take you or who you may be rubbing elbows with. From both a professional and personal standpoint, you can mark down the Green Mountain Coffee® sponsorship of the 46th Annual Country Music Association (known as the CMAs to us fans) Awards in Nashville in the time-well-spent column.

In October, the Green Mountain Coffee brand sponsored a massive 2-day marathon of remote radio broadcasts preceding the Country Music Association Awards (CMA) Show in Nashville, TN. Personnel from 50 Country stations from around the U.S. were there, all part of the Clear Channel Premiere Radio Network. Naturally, all those radio personalities need people to interview, so also in attendance were over 100 of the biggest names in Country music today. Artists and bands like Faith Hill, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town and Kelly Clarkson were there, along with Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, Darius Rucker, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Taylor Swift, and many more. Many of them enjoyed the unlimited access to our Keurig® sampling array and tasty lattes and cappuccinos served up by a talented local barista that we partnered with.  To say the least, it was an elbow rubbing time.

(My strictly un-scientific poll revealed that the Green Mountain Coffee Caramel Vanilla Cream K-Cup® packs were the belle of the ball, and seemed to be the variety of choice for many country fans.)

We also served free samples of great K-Cup® pack varieties like Fair Trade Organic Sumatran Reserve and Fair Trade Vermont Country Blend® to all the fans lined up in front of the hotel, waiting patiently for photos and autographs from some of their favorite Country stars.

Another part of our sponsorship entailed working with a great new band called The Henningsens. The band is currently in the midst of a ten-city promotional tour, and are criss-crossing the country in a beautifully wrapped Green Mountain Coffee bus. Let us know if you happen to spy the bus in your area!

Hope to rub elbows with you at an event sometime soon…

Brewing with Green Mountain at Hampton Beach

Imagine a lazy late-summer weekend, with warm winds whipping the white caps up and down the New Hampshire coast, and acres of options for fresh-from-the-ocean culinary delights. Not too bad, right? The only thing that would improve the image is an oasis of free freshly brewed hot and iced gourmet coffee served up by our knowledgeable and enthusiastic sampling team.

Now you’re in the frame of mind – you’re walking along Ocean Boulevard at the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, and there, like a mirage, in stark contrast to the multiple white tents of vendors selling everything from driftwood art to emu oil soap, is our giant green and blue Green Mountain Coffee® tent, doling out thousands of complementary cups of great Keurig® Brewed® coffees.

Green Mountain Coffee at Hampton Beach! By Nick Lockwood

The tent is alive with activity as many people, like you, were drawn there, enticed by the lure of specialty coffee. You enter the massive booth, and read about coffee harvesting and processing.  Who knew?  You choose from one of the 12 Green Mountain Coffee® varieties being offered (ooh, Dark Magic®, good choice – I was thinking the same thing!). You take a goofy picture with your friends inside our 9 ft. tall My Coffee Moment coffee cup-shaped photo booth, and can’t wait to share the picture on your Facebook wall Monday morning. You take a caffeinated coffee quiz and get some fun prizes for showing your java knowledge. Suddenly your good day just got a whole lot better…nice! So good to see you, thanks for stopping by.

And if we missed you at Hampton Beach (maybe fried dough and lobster quesadillas aren’t your thing), hopefully we’ll see you in our backyard, Burlington, Vermont, for a rocking good time at this weekend’s Grand Point North Festival!

Our First Roommate Dinner

I’ve written about the advantages of moving in with my girlfriend Lena recently, but I failed to mention that we also live with a couple of extra roommates, Matt and Kathleen. Kathleen is 25, only a couple of years older than me and Lena, and works as a manager at a restaurant in town. Matt is 31 and is one of the top chefs at a different restaurant nearby. While it might seem like an inconvenient situation for a couple to share an apartment with two other people, it's actually worked out much better than expected - just like moving in with Lena!

First of all, having two roommates that work in the restaurant industry means that our schedules rarely line up. As a result, we usually only see each other two or three times a week for brief periods, which means that we never feel like we're on top of each other in the apartment.

While we all appreciate the way our schedules allow us all to have free reign of the apartment at different times, it also makes it difficult for us to hang out and bond like regular roommates. Even when we make plans to see each other, there's usually some sort of last-minute restaurant emergency that keeps either Matt or Kathleen away for the night. However, we managed to line up our work schedules this week so we could all sit down to the first roommate dinner in the apartment.

Considering that Matt is a chef at one of the fanciest restaurants in town, it was only natural that he cook up something extra delicious for dinner. I came home from work to the intoxicating aromas of fresh stuffing, roasting pork, buttery potatoes, and all manner of herbs and spices. When Lena and Kathleen arrived, we sat down at the table together for the first time, popped a bottle of wine and let the evening take us where it may.

Several servings and glasses of wine later, we were all swapping stories about our families, childhoods, annoying jobs we had worked and plans for the future. The wine had made us a little sleepy, but we didn't want to cut the night short, so we threw on the Keurig® brewer and brewed some strong coffee to keep us going.

Before long we were talking and drinking coffee well into the evening. The hot beverages got us in the mood for some dessert, so we finished up the evening heading to the local ice cream shop for some after dinner treats. I really hope that we can find time in our busy schedules to make roommate dinner night a regular tradition.

An ode to coffee-fueled family game nights

Despite the fact that I am a 23-year-old college graduate, I can't deny the fact I still possess a boyish love of games. Throughout my undergraduate career, my friends and I tore through just about every board and card game in the book during our weekly family game night (which we lovingly abbreviated to FGN) - Monopoly, Sorry, Uno, Risk, The Game of Life, Scrabble, Blockus and Taboo among many more. We even developed our own official/unofficial FGN rulebook in order to settle the inevitable disputes that would arise among our extremely competitive group of friends.

I bring up this particular aspect of my life because I recently got together with my remaining group of college friends to breathe some new life into the old FGN. We dusted off the Monopoly board and instantly it was like a junior year Wednesday night all over again. We started snatching up properties like it was going out of style.

I have to say, even though it wasn't the exact same crew that we had back in the day, it was great to reconnect in the name of  family game night. Before long, the same semi-good natured arguments had broken out, the old jokes were being relived (like when my friend Carlo famously threw Taboo across the room and stormed out of the apartment) and the refreshments were flowing free.

In fact, one of the most memorable aspects that reappeared during our update on FGN was brewing lots and lots of coffee. Back in college, family game night often crossed the midnight mark into the wee hours of the morning, so we made sure to keep our Keurig® brewer handy at all times. This time was no different - I was prepared with several Green Mountain Coffee® K-Cup® packs of Dark Magic® Extra Bold, French Roast and Colombian Fair Trade Select so that we could all get our favorite caffeine fixes.

And wouldn't you know, the rebirth of FGN once again crossed into familiar late night territory. After all, as anyone who has ever played Monopoly knows, it's not a game that goes quickly or easily - everyone was making deals and trades that prolonged the outcome well into the evening. Pretty soon, we had completely abandoned our other drinks in favor of cup after cup of coffee. Tired, yet still wired, we kept FGN going until my girlfriend Lena had emerged victorious - at 3:30 a.m. It was just like old times.

Mothers Day is a Special Day!

Mother’s Day is the perfect day to recognize your mom for all of her kindness. It is also the perfect day to recognize other moms like your wife, sister, grandmother, or even a favorite aunt. The day gives us all time to reflect on all of the amazing things these important women have done for us and their children.

But what to get someone who’s done so much?  I find it hard to shop for my mom and I am always looking for perfect gift ideas. I am also always on the look-out for the perfect Mother’s Day gift for my wife. I was recently browsing GreenMountainCoffee.com for ideas and had a few things that caught my eye.

For my own mother, who has always liked and collected, on a small scale, hand-made pottery, there is a good selection of fun ceramic mugs and a few choice hand-thrown artisan-crafted pieces. She is a fan of the Native American style glazes and when I saw the Mocha Red River Mug, I immediately thought of her. I think it is the perfect addition to her eclectic pottery collection.  I was also partially persuaded to purchase this for my mother based on the amount of positive reviews it’s received.

Chocolate is always a good way to go for the women in my life. A chocolate cake made from the Molten Chocolate cake mix may be just the right way to say, “Thank you” to my Wife Natasha.

While looking around on GreenMountainCoffee.com, I noticed there is currently a bundled offer -- buy a Keurig Platinum brewer and get free K-Cup packs plus a Brew Over Ice tumbler - that is hard to refuse. I can easily see my mother, wife or sister using this every day and smiling each time she brews.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Island Coconut Chicken Curry Recipe

It's the first day of summer and you know what that means?  A new, mouthwatering recipe from the mind of Amber of Bluebonnets & Brownies.  She's brought us two scrumptious coffee-strewn desserts and now... now she helps us answer the age-old question: What's for dinner?

--

Last time, I went over the top sweet with Wild Mountain Blueberry® Coffee Pound Cake. Now, there's nothing in the world wrong with sweet, delicious baked goods - but when you're talking about Fair Trade Island Coconut® Coffee, a sweet dessert just seemed a little too obvious to me.

I decided I should challenge myself, and you, by turning Island Coconut into a savory dish. Island Coconut is such a fun coffee flavor. We enjoy it around here as the perfect finish to a meal, practically dessert in a coffee cup. So turning it into a dinner ingredient just upped the ante on one of my favorite Green Mountain Coffee flavors.

Folks, I like to think just maybe I hit this one out of the proverbial ballpark. Whether you've ever had Indian food before or not, I implore you to try making this dish. The majority of the ingredients will be familiar to you, and once you've added curry powder to your spice cabinet, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Island Coconut Chicken Curry is best served over Basmati or Long Grain white rice, with a side of Naan bread. Naan is a pillowy flat bread native to Indian cuisine. You can usually find it in your grocer's bakery area, but if you can't, feel free to substitute some freshly made tortillas. I certainly won't tell!

You can make this curry as directed in a dutch oven or large saute pan, or use a slow cooker for an incredibly easy weeknight dinner.

In the recipe below, I've linked to where you can find the two curry powders I used. You should also be able to find a variety of curry powders in your local spice store, and at least one variety is usually carried at major grocery chains. You're welcome to change up the style of curry powders if you like more heat.  The two I used are fairly mild, and work incredibly well with coconut, which, after all, is the star of this show.

Island Coconut Chicken Curry

Serves 4

1 medium onion (about 1/2 cup), diced
1 large red pepper (about 3/4 cup), diced
4-6 cloves of garlic
1 6 oz can of tomato paste
4 oz half and half or plain yogurt (I used half and half)
6 oz freshly brewed, hot Green Mountain Island Coconut coffee (I used the smallest setting on my Keurig)
1 tbsp maharajah curry powder
2 tbsp rogan josh curry powder
1/2 tsp red chili flakes (optional)
salt and pepper to taste

1 tbsp olive or canola oil
1 1/2 lbs. skinless chicken breast or thighs, diced into 1" cubes
1 cup frozen diced okra
fresh cilantro for garnish

Place onion, red pepper, garlic, tomato paste, coffee, cream or yogurt, both curry powders, chili flakes, salt and pepper in a food processor or blender. Pulse to combine until you have a semi-smooth sauce.

In a large frying pan or dutch oven, heat oil on high. Add chicken pieces and season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow to brown for 10-15 minutes, stirring often.

Add okra pieces to the pan, and cover with curry sauce. Allow to simmer, covered, on low to medium heat for 30-40 minutes, giving the flavors time to combine. Stir every 10 minutes or so.

If making in a slow cooker, cook on low for 6-8 hours or 4 hours on high.

Serve over rice, and garnish with fresh cilantro.

The Sampling Train Stops at Tubbs Station

Like a cyclone of warmth and good cheer, the Green Mountain Coffee events staffers have been criss-crossing New England and other parts of the country, sharing delightful wares at a whole host of special events. During the last month we’re been found at many different events, but one of the most exciting ones was the Tubbs Snowshoes Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer series.

This year we provided coffee for 'Stompers' at fund raising events in Vernon, NJ, Stratton Mountain, VT, Salt Lake City, UT, Snoqualmie, WA, Mt. Hood, OR, and Frisco, CO. As an extra incentive, we also provided new Keurig Brewers to all individuals who raised $1,000 or more to support Tubbs' fund-raising efforts benefiting the Susan G. Komen foundation. Across the six events, over $220,000 was raised, and we’re proud to play a small part in that remarkable achievement.

If you’d like to help in the effort to fight breast cancer, please feel free to donate to Susan G. Komen for the Cure here.

No rest for the weary, though, as we're packing up the van and keeping the caffeine train rolling. I hope to see you next month at the Boston Marathon Finish Line Festival on 4/19, two separate Earth Day events in Boston on 4/22, and a multitude of other locations!  Just look for the coffee van.
