Coffee Makers

Let’s Get Organized!

Did you know last Friday kicked off National Get Organized Week? I’m sure you knew, if it was displayed at your desktop, on a sticky note in your planner, or typed into your I-phone calendar. You get the idea.

It’s no surprise that each year seems to get busier and busier in our lives, from our hectic schedules at work or school, to making time with family and friends. The pace of our lives never ceases to amaze. And so, it is relieving to know there is one week in the year that is actually scheduled to ‘get organized’. What better way than the midst of the school year and fall season to learn a few tricks and tips for order and organization in our lives. So here are my top 5 tips to getting organized. Maybe you’ll find yourself trying a few out in your jam-packed day:

  1. Make lists. I am a big list maker and let me tell you, it does wonders. We do not realize sometimes that with such a long laundry list of to-do’s, if we do not actually write down what we need to get done, things may just slip between our fingers.. Sticky notes should be your best friend! Have fun with it by picking out neon stationary and different shapes and sizes to really stand out and will not be lost at your desk or on the kitchen fridge.
  2. Spring clean. Fall, Winter, & Summer, too! Although it is such a breath of fresh air to get out those lemon-infused cleaners and make our windows shine that beautiful day in May, ultimate cleaning should not be saved just for spring. Make sure you’re always refreshing your space, whether it’s re-decorating your study in your house or changing out your plain white towels for a pop of orange in the bathroom this fall! Even going through your closet every month –I know! – will help in your domination of organization! Any type of face-lift, however big or small, can definitely get you on the track of organization and a sense of zen.
  3. Store and put it away. For good. It’s always hard to let go of things that we may not necessarily need and that step of actually letting go is tough, trust me.  However, once you actually ask yourself when you last used a certain item, whether at home or at your office desk, it will be that much easier to cope with the loss and move on. Declutter space, even a little at a time.
  4. Stay calm! Overwhelming yourself will not help in organizing your day-to-day life. Try tackling one task at a time and you will be able to conquer all. Try sipping on a cup of Bigelow Green Tea, using your Keurig® brewer, while preparing to power through your organizational skills.
  5. Make it fun! Whether you’re color coding, label making, or using some other fun and funky way of getting organized, you will see that it can actually be a creative challenge and one that will not make you cringe next time you organize your drawers! To give you that extra energy, go bold with Coffee People Jet Fuel K-Cup® packs. You'll really be ready for anything. And perhaps even a dance party!

I hope you try out some of these tips and your day just might become that much more organized. Won’t it be a great feeling to then have more time to do all the things you love?

Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee Waffle Recipe: Hello, Gorgeous!

Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee Waffles

Have you ever had dessert waffles? The concept was a surprise to me when I first moved to England. There, waffles aren't a breakfast food at all. They're 100% dessert food!

It didn't take me long to embrace the concept, and I think you should too. Especially when we're talking about waffles made with delicious Green Mountain Coffee® Caramel Vanilla Cream.

Light, sweet, with hints of buttery caramel and smooth vanilla, both the coffee and these waffles are a crowd pleaser. These Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee Waffles stayed light, even though I used a whole grain baking mix in the recipe. I was pleasantly surprised. You might be looking at me with an eyebrow raised, but who says dessert can't be whole grain too?

Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee Waffles Image

Fire up your waffle maker, grab some vanilla ice cream and the best maple syrup (Another great Vermont export!) you can get your hands on. You'll have a simple dessert whipped up before your family even knows you left the table.

Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee Waffles

makes 4 waffles

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Bisquick Complete or similar waffle/pancake mix

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 3/4 cup Green Mountain Coffee® Caramel Vanilla Cream

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (roughly, see directions)

  • 2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil

  • Vanilla Ice Cream for topping

  • Maple Syrup, for topping

Directions

  1. Heat waffle iron. While the iron is warming up, mix the batter:
  2. In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine waffle mix, salt, and nutmeg. Whisk together until nutmeg and salt are evenly distributed. Set aside.
  3. In a 2-cup measuring cup, brew one 6 oz. (3/4 cup) Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee K-Cup® pack.
  4. Add the teaspoon of vanilla extract to the measuring cup, then add heavy cream until the measurement on the cup reaches 1 1/3.
  5. Pour the coffee-cream mixture into the dry ingredients. Add two tablespoons of vegetable oil.
  6. Whisk all ingredients together until you have a thick batter.
  7. Spray waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Pour roughly 1/3 cup of batter into each well of the waffle iron. Allow to cook until golden brown and the waffle comes away cleanly from the iron.
  8. Top with scoops of vanilla ice cream and maple syrup. Serve immediately.

Green Mountain Coffee French Vanilla Coffee Gelato

Helping My Mom Chill Out

Amy's Mom Chilling Out

My parents recently bought their first Keurig® brewer as a show of support for when I became a genuine Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. employee. In contrast to their 27-year-old drip maker, the Keurig® brewer was clean, fast, and – most important for my mother who panics when she has to use an ATM – easy to use. She called me the other day to let me know how nice it was that she no longer had to choke down my father’s “Hair on Your Chest” coffee and that she could enjoy what he calls her “Fru-fru Flavored” brews.

In that moment, I decided she was ready for the next level in K-Cup® pack satisfaction.

Me: You know, Mom, you can also make cold drinks from the brewer. Iced tea and lemonade, n’stuff.

Mom: Oh, no, I didn’t realize that. I don’t drink iced tea anymore (Estelle thought it could lead to kidney stones), but lemonade would be nice.

Me: Yeah, it’s actually just the same process as brewing hot drinks.

Mom: I didn’t see a cold button on the machine. Where is that?

Me: There isn’t one. You’re still brewing hot, but you do it over ice in a glass…well, not in a glass. Don’t use glass.

Mom: How come?

Me: Remember that time I tried to cool a pot of hot soup by putting it on the glass shelf in the refrigerator?

Mom: That was a mess.

Me: Yeah. So use a plastic tumbler. Just fill it with ice and brew like you would a regular cup of coffee.

Mom: I could make an iced coffee!

Me: For sure. Except, you’re supposed to use special Brew Over Ice K-Cup® packs. They’re more concentrated so the melting ice doesn’t dilute the flavor too much.

Mom: Wow, Amy, you sure know your stuff. Of all my children, you are clearly the smartest.

OK, I may have embellished that last part, but the soup disaster is totally true. The cool part is that my mom gets to show off to all her friends how Keurig®-savvy she is.

And now, you can, too!

Green Mountain Coffee Brew Over Ice Hazelnut & Cream Ice Pops Recipe

They're here: the dog days of summer. If you're like me, you're craving fall (and Fair Trade Pumpkin Spice K-Cup® packs) like crazy. But we're not quite there. These last few weeks of summer's warmth and late sunsets are just the time to savor Green Mountain Coffee's Brew Over Ice flavors.

Around our house, we adore all the Brew Over Ice choices, from Nantucket Blend Iced Coffee to Strawberry Pomegranate Vitamin Burst™, but we decided to harness the inherent dessert qualities of Brew Over Ice Hazelnut coffee to make one last summery treat - Brew Over Ice Hazelnut and Cream Ice Pops! Just a few simple ingredients and one press of your Keurig® brewer's button will have you on the way to an indulgent sweet treat that's easy too. We love this novel approach to "iced" coffee. I can see making many more ice pops this way with all the Brew Over Ice flavors! I used my Zoku Pop Maker to create these ice pops, but you can use any ice pop mold you like. It'll just take longer to freeze each layer.

Green Mountain Coffee® Brew Over Ice Hazelnut & Cream Ice Pops

makes 4 ice pops

Ingredients

6 oz Green Mountain Coffee® Brew Over Ice Hazelnut coffee

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

6 oz Coffee-Mate Natural Bliss Vanilla Creamer

Directions

Brew one 6 oz cup of Green Mountain Coffee® Brew Over Ice Hazelnut coffee in your Keurig® brewer. Pour the cup into a small saucepan and add sugar.

Stir the coffee-sugar mixture frequently over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved completely. Pour the coffee back into a ceramic mug and place it in the refrigerator. Allow the coffee to cool completely before you make the ice pops. When the coffee is cool, use a measuring cup or funnel to pour coffee into each pop mold about 1/3 of the way up.

Place in the freezer and allow to freeze completely before starting the next layer.

When the first layer is frozen, repeat this step with Coffee-Mate Natural Bliss creamer, pouring it on top of the first layer, another 1/3 of the way up the pop mold. Place back in the freezer and allow to freeze completely.

Once the second layer is frozen, finish with another coffee layer.

If you'd rather have ice pops in a hurry, and don't care about the striped look, simply mix the coffee and creamer together and freeze all at once.

Looking for Keurig Coupons or K-Cup Coupons?

I often get asked by my family and friends, “Where can I get K-Cup® coupons?” or “How can I save money on my K-Cup® packs?” I drink a lot of coffee, so I found out awhile back that one of the best ways to save on K-Cup® packs is through our Café Express® Savings Club.  As a club member, every time you shop at Green Mountain Coffee® you’ll get great savings (15% off!)on Keurig® K-Cup® and Vue™ packs, bagged coffee, gifts, coffee makers & coffee accessories.

I shared this with the family and they were thrilled, especially Uncle Morty!  I’ll admit: To stop the “Where can I get K-Cup® coupons,” question, I’ve given Café Express® Savings Club memberships to my family and friends during the holidays.  It’s a special way to treat every coffee lover on my list throughout the year (and get major brownie points).

If you just want to purchase a few K-Cup® packs and save money with a coffee coupon, take a look at the Coffee Coupon Page or the Deal of the Week Page.  There are new deals every week, so check back often!

Announcing the new Keurig® Vue™ Brewer

You may have heard, but today it was announced that the line of Keurig® Single Cup Brewers is expanding with the addition of the Keurig® Vue brewer, a premium new platform designed with the ability to brew stronger, brew bigger, and brew hotter.

The new Vue brewer, paired with new Vue packs*, comes with all the ease and convenience of the existing Keurig® K-Cup® system with added customizable features so you have control over the strength, size, and temperature of your coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and iced beverages, as well as new frothy café beverages.

 The new Keurig Vue Brewer

Pretty nice, right?

To say the least, I can't wait for the Keurig® Vue™ Brewer to be available for purchase in the coming weeks.  It has a lot of options that I’ve been dreaming about in a single cup coffee maker:

  • Stronger Coffee: The Vue brewer adjusts water pressure, timing, and airflow so I can have the stronger brew I love in the mornings – at any size.
  • Bigger Coffee:  I can now brew into my large, stainless steel travel mug with new Vue packs specially formulated to brew a bigger cup up to 18-oz.  I’m ready to fill my travel mug with a strong cup of my favorite Green Mountain Coffee® variety, Breakfast Blend.
  • Hotter Beverages: Now, we can choose a temperature range between 187 and 197 degrees Fahrenheit to really customize our cups.  My wife Natasha enjoys drinking Celestial Seasonings Green Tea and always likes the water to be extra hot to let the tea seep. It’s like the designers had her in mind when they created the new Keurig® Vue™ Brewer!
  • And much more:  A few Sundays back, I was enjoying some Dark Magic Extra Bold with Natasha with a plate full of crêpes (I like to think I am an expert at making crêpes).  We decided to add some homemade whipped cream to the coffee and crêpes – just to mix things up. Suddenly, Natasha looked at me and said, “Wouldn’t it be great if our Keurig® brewer could make a cappuccino?” Good news: The Vue™ brewer can!  With exclusive two-step Barista Prima® Café beverages, I can now enjoy a cappuccino on the weekend when I am eating my crêpes with the family.

The Keurig® K-Cup® Brewer and the Keurig® Vue™ Brewer complement each other so well!  Deliciously simple and brewing what I like, the way I like it – what a pair!

*Just a reminder: The Keurig® Vue™ Brewer is not compatible with K-Cup® packs; they use Vue™ packs.

Fair Trade Also Means Better Quality in the Workplace

“Every business transaction is a challenge to see that both parties come out fairly.”

–  Adam Smith, 1759

We can make a difference by taking our sense of taste and social responsibility to the office each morning.

Small businesses have substantial influence in their community, and when they adopt practices like supporting Fair Trade that advance the quality of life for their patrons, communities, and the environment, it makes a huge difference.

Here are a few suggestions for adding Fair Trade in your workplace, starting around the coffee station:

  • Ensure that your office coffee machine is brewing Fair Trade coffee. Also, encourage your employer to supply Fair Trade cocoa and tea, as well as Fair Trade chocolates as a snack during meetings or as an employee reward.

  • Post signs in the office break room or kitchen, preferably above the coffee maker, letting your coworkers know that the beverages they are drinking are supporting small-scale farmers.

  • Many organizations working on Fair Trade provide fact sheets and resources on their website. You can order informational materials or download them from organizations such as the Fair Trade Resource Network or Transfair USA. Several offer material you can print out and give to coworkers (maybe with a piece of Fair Trade chocolate as an incentive).

  • Use your company newsletter or blog to promote Fair Trade.

  • Ask for corporate donations to Fair Trade organizations.

  • Ask the businesses you support during the workweek to sell Fair Trade products. Don’t be intimidated; business owners really do value consumer feedback.

  • Let your local merchants know you value the Fair Trade items they sell, and ask them to stock any you’d like to purchase.

  • Encourage your business to advocate for making your town a “Fair Trade Town” — a community that makes a commitment to supporting Fair Trade. Lead the way!

  • Exchange Fair Trade gifts with coworkers during the holidays.

  • Give the gift of Fair Trade to clients: Global Exchange, for example, has a Corporate Gift Program allowing you to buy socially conscious Fair Trade gifts.

The Fair Trade Certified™ label helps your office make better choices, with the assurance that the merchandise purchased is socially and environmentally conscious. As we become more aware of opportunities to use our influence in the marketplace, Fair Trade provides a path for both individuals and businesses to vote with their dollars and become a real force for good.

Making your Iced Coffee Uniquely Yours

Having survived our first 100-degree spell this summer, our iced machine has certainly earned its keep.  We’ve brewed, brewed, and brewed some more – and have stumbled upon some n’ice ideas to make this summer’s iced coffees – like Brew Over Ice Nantucket Blend® or French Vanilla -  even more brew-tiful.  Here are some of our favorites:

  1. Vanilla Infused Simple Syrup: No sugar clumps and it adds an extra burst of vanilla flavor?  Yes, please!  Here’s how to do it:

    1. Split a vanilla bean lengthwise into halves and place in a heatproof jar or bottle.

    2. In a saucepan combine 1:2 ratio of sugar and water.

    3. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar dissolves.

    4. Pour the hot syrup over the jar/bottle and let it soak up the vanilla-goodness for up to 10 hours.

    5. Store in the refrigerator (up to a week – but it doesn’t last that long around here anyway).

  2. Coffee iced cubes: Okay, you’ve heard us extol the wonders of this little cube before.  As Brew Over Ice coffee is made so the flavor won’t be diluted when the ice melts, this a great way to plus-up your coffee kick for those who have other coffee makers– or even add a different flavor to your go-to iced brew.

    1. Brew your favorite blend (love to use Fair Trade Wild Mountain Blueberry™ for this one) into a cup.

    2. Pour the coffee into an ice cube tray and place in the freezer.

    3. Pop the cubes out when you’re ready – just brew over it like you would with ice (Brew Over Ice (coffee cubes)).

  3. Iced (cream) coffee:  Lots of people reach for cream and sugar when they make their iced coffee – so why not add a scoop of ice cream as a shortcut?  We love to use a scoop of Ben & Jerry’s Fair Trade Vanilla, or, if you’re into a adventure, Coffee HEATH® Bar crunch!

What do you do to make your iced coffee uniquely yours?

Homemade Coffee Central in Afghanistan

UPDATE: For those who wanted to know how to donate to our troops, we have a blog entry talking about that very subject here.

--

No matter where you are, it’s always nice to have a piece of home with you – even if it’s just a fresh cup of coffee, made by your very own Keurig® Single-Cup Brewer, in the middle of a war zone.

Dear Green Mountain Team,

We have enjoyed your coffee and the Keurig coffee maker since last fall.

In the spring of this year my husband was deployed to Afghanistan and crushed at the thought of not being able to have his K-Cups anymore.  I bought him another Keurig machine and shipped it to Afghanistan. He LOVES having it and today he sent me an e-mail and a photo of his "Coffee Central" he created. Every morning his buddies come over to his CHU (Containerized Housing Unit) to enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee.

We thought you would enjoy seeing that even over there you are revered!!

Kind regards,

Annette and Tuck

Welcome to Coffee Central, courtesy of Maj. John “Tuck” of the 2D Stryker Cavalry Regiment and his wife, Annette:
FOB Lagman is in the middle of Zabul Province, Afghanistan and it is the last spot anyone would expect to find a great cup of coffee.  I decided to change that and give my friends a place to get away and enjoy a great cup of coffee.  I even constructed a coffee selection case for the varieties I have.

May I be the first to say, "That’s a huge mug!"  All the better to enjoy a great cup of coffee in!  Plus, a homemade K-Cup cabinet?  Wow!  Thank you so much for sharing Coffee Central with us!  And, from all of us at Green Mountain Coffee: Thank you so much for your service!

Employees Chill Out with our Brew Over Ice Coffees

As the summer goes on, it’s clear that the most valued employee on our Waterbury campus is our ice maker.  Since Brew Over Ice K-Cup® portion packs appeared in the break room during one of the hottest weeks this summer, that glorious device of frozen delight has been working overtime.

And for good reason: We need our iced coffee. When mid-afternoon rolls around (or even when it hits 10 a.m.), we jump at the thought of a chilly-drink that’s bold, fresh, and “ahh”-inspiring.  It’s just too good to turn down when it’s so simple to brew and tastes so good, just ask two enthusiastic members of our newly dubbed Green Mountain Coffee Tasters Guild:

First, French Vanilla Iced Coffee K-Cups® with a newly-energized, ready to “chilax” Caitlin from marketing.

Yes, we have ice! Afternoon energy lull be gone! With a tumbler full of French Vanilla Iced Coffee, I have the perfect exotic afternoon pick-me-up to get me through the rest of my day.

And what about Nantucket Blend® Iced Coffee K-Cups®? Lesley from B2B, our resident poet, thinks it’s totally tubular – like hanging ten in the office!

An Iced Nantucket in the middle of the day turns work into a getaway!

Now those are two brews you can get behind and brew directly over ice!  I sense a trip to the ice maker coming on…

Rhode Island #Revelation2Action idea

We're about two weeks into the Revelation to Action competition and the entries are starting to roll in! The online competition is looking for ideas that strengthen local communities in New England and New York. So far we've got 16 entries and 13 nominations!

Today, we're highlighting one of the online competition's most read ideas last week - this one from Rhode Island.

Meet ecoRI, Inc from Rhode Island, about Rhode Island:

Their mission is " to investigate issues and write stories that will catalyze positive environmental change in Rhode Island. The nonprofit journalistic initiative is devoted to educating Rhode Island policy makers and the public about the causes, consequences and solutions to local environmental issues.

According to their entry, "no other state features an online news organization that is solely dedicated to local, independent and investigative environmental journalism. ecoRI.org doesn't have links to stories written by other sources and posted on other Web sites, and the stories, opinions and videos are written and produced by Rhode Island people about topics that matter to Rhode Islanders."

Rhode Islanders, what do you think? Let us know your thoughts below or discuss their idea on the Revelation to Action competition site.

Know another organization that is working to strengthen your community? Nominate them! If an organization you nominate wins, you win a Keurig B60 Single-Cup Brewer (just for nominating!!).

We're also holding re-tweet competitions every Friday during the competition, with a chance to win free coffee. Follow Changemakers and GreenMtnCoffee on Twitter for more information. You can also check out last week's Coffee Break video for more information.

For all prize and competition information, head to the Eligibility, Criteria and Prizes section on the Revelation to Action competition homepage.

How do you share your K-Cup love? With a Wedding Cake, perhaps?

Earlier this week, a photo entered our Customer Service e-mail in-box that caused more than a few sappy smiles around the office: An image of an elegantly decorated three-tier wedding cake, complete with roses and cake topper.

A wedding cake – or was it?

Upon further inspection (and a few, “Do you see what I see?” conversations), the wedding cake was revealed to be – get this – made of Green Mountain Coffee K-Cups. 15 different varieties, to be exact.

Coffee Cake

I could tell you the story behind this show of K-Cup love, but I think one of the architects of this no-sot-edible-but-oh-so-brewable confection says it best.  Take it, Alice:

“My sister’s son is getting married on November 7, 2009.  He and his fiancé received a Keurig coffee maker at her bridal shower.  My sister and I also own Keurig makers and LOVE them.  We also love the flavors of coffee that Green Mountain has to offer.

So, my sister, who doesn’t have one crafty bone in her body, decided that it would be a cool idea to make a “coffee cake” to surprise them with at the reception.  But, because she didn’t know how to start, she brought me in on the project to be the “cake boss”.  We used a plastic cake stand and started out with about 15 different flavors of coffees in white cups. […]

We had the best time making it and thought that Green Mountain Coffee would enjoy our craftiness with their product.  And, I am sure the bride will be enjoying coffee while she dismantles it!!”

We send our best wishes to the happy couple!  May your days be caffeinated and full of wonderful revelations!

Happy brewing!

Summer Camping? Don't forget the coffee!

Dr. Jane Goodall demonstrates her method for brewing coffee in the wild.

Recently, the CBS Early Show featured gear guru Paul Hochman talking about how more families are choosing camping vacations over more pricey visits to expensive resorts this summer.

There’s nothing like waking up in the wild on a chilly morning and greeting the day with a cup of hot coffee!  Green Mountain Coffee’s coffee experts are outdoor enthusiasts and never without their daily cup, so I polled them for their recommended methods for brewing coffee tentside.

Ed just returned from a car camping trip up & down the East Coast.  He picked up micro-roasts from boutique coffee shops along the way and brewed them up with a hand-grinder and an insulated French press.

Don prefers the Mocha Pot, a dual chamber “stove-top” espresso maker.  A standard for homes in Italy, this is ideal for camping as it makes a concentrated cup with little heat and water.  Perfect for Don’s canoe and backpack camping excursions!

Lindsey also uses a French press, made of thermal stainless steel so it won’t break during her hard core adventures.  Inside the press, she stores a bag with enough ground coffee to last a few days.

Winston also likes the French press and pre-ground coffee for his Adirondack adventures.  Even easier, he says, is the Chemex brewer, or the Toddy cold brewer.  With the Toddy you make up a concentrate in advance, and add water when ready to drink.  It can be served cold or heated on the stove for a hot cup.

Deb clued me in to the convenient Mini Minit.  These biodegradable filters are perfect for making one cup of coffee or tea at a time.

I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Jane Goodall demonstrate her rustic coffee-making methods in New York City when we launched our Tanzanian Gombe Reserve coffee.  She recycles the foot of a pair of pantyhose to use as a filter!

Bottom line…with a little preparation and a small camping stove, you can make sure your next adventure is well-caffeinated.
